10th September PLA Autumn Festival Event

Charged.hk has been invited to participate in a special event for the PLA in Hong Kong, at their facility on Stonecutters Island. Great timing, given the Drive Electric Week events occurring around the world that week.

In collaboration with the Collectors Car Club, we'll be showing a wide selection of cars, and Charged.HK has been invited to show EVs. There will be a vehicle parade, as well as exhibition. Lunch will be provided, and each car can have 1 driver and 1 guest.

This is an opportunity to support the PLA in HK. They do a fantastic job, and it would be great to show them the future of transportation in Hong Kong.

This is a volunteer event, lunch will be provided, and there will be no charge.

The number of vehicles is limited, and we will be showing both classic cars as well as EVs (the past as well as the future). There will be a maximum of one driver and one passenger per car, and all persons must be 16 years or older.

As we have a limited exhibition space for vehicles, and we want to ensure as much variety in the types of vehicles we show, sign-up is open to all charged.hk members. However, should too many vehicles of any one particular type request to attend, we will draw random lots to select the attendees. In such a case, priority will be given to founder members, ordinary members, then associate members (in that order). Please try to bring an 'unusual' EV. BMW i3. BMW i8. Nissan Leaf. Whatever, so long as it has a plug.

Wikipedia

Thanks to committee member Locky Law for his hard work in getting the Charged Hong Kong wikipedia page up, running, and approved. This will be a great resource to track the progress of electric vehicles in Hong Kong.

Clean Disruption - Why Energy & Transportation will be Obsolete by 2030

Tony Seba is the author of “Clean Disruption of Energy and Transportation”, “Solar Trillions” and “Winners Take All”, a serial Silicon Valley entrepreneur, and an instructor in Entrepreneurship, Disruption and Clean Energy at Stanford’s Continuing Studies Program. His work focuses on clean energy, entrepreneurship, market disruption, and the exponential technology trends, business model innovation, and product architecture innovations that are leading to the disruption of some the world’s major industries, such as energy, transportation, infrastructure, finance, and manufacturing.

In this talk at the Swedbank Nordic Energy Summit in Oslo, he presents the case for the coming disruption of the energy and transportation industries, and why that disruption is coming sooner that we expect. In just over a decade, the world moved from horses to cars; displacing a transportation system that had been in place for millennia. The combination of electric batteries and solar energy is set to do the same for energy production, storage, and transportation.

There is also a good (shorter) summary of this talk on the Electrek website:

We are recruiting volunteers as event teachers, please sign up if you are willing to pass on your experience and knowledge to our young students.

Participants: around 88 junior secondary students and 3 teachers

Time: 2-4pm

Date: 14th July 2016 (Thurs)

Venue: Kai Tak Cruise Terminal

Our learning objective is to provide your students with basic (to advanced) knowledge of electric vehicles (EV) and related technology, as well as the important role that EVs play in combating climate change in Hong Kong and around the world. This program will not only be interactive, fun and informative for your students, their knowledge in maths, sciences and I.T. will also be put to the test. Our team of volunteers are experts from various fields and will be able to provide a broad perspective in understanding all about EVs, such that they can teach their parents all about EVs after the event.

Electric cars still the greener option by far

Letter to the editor, in today's SCMP: http://www.scmp.com/comment/letters/article/1938603/letters-editor-april...

I refer to the article, “Electric shock – Tesla cars in Hong Kong more polluting than petrol models” (April 13). The Bernstein report quoted in the article presents a distorted picture, skewing the data to fit the author’s investment portfolio. Not surprising, given the report’s author’s oil and gas background and investments.

The most outrageous distortion is the choice of HK Electric in the estimation of carbon intensity, while completely excluding CLP, whose carbon dioxide emissions are 30 per cent lower. CLP generates three-quarters of the electricity, and powers 70 per cent of the electric vehicles, in Hong Kong. Correct that one distortion, and the report result is reversed.

Bernstein uses artificial fuel economy figures; production emissions are exaggerated, and the amount of carbon dioxide produced in the extraction, refinement and transportation of oil is understated.

Earth Day - 22nd April 2016

What are we waiting for? The time is now.

The movement continues.

We are now entering the 46th year of a movement that continues to inspire, challenge ideas, ignite passion, and motivate people to action.

In 1970, the year of our first Earth Day, the movement gave voice to an emerging consciousness, channeling human energy toward environmental issues. Forty-six years later, we continue to lead with groundbreaking ideas and by the power of our example.

And so it begins. Today. Right here and right now. Earth Day is more than just a single day — April 22, 2016. It’s bigger than attending a rally and taking a stand.

This Earth Day and beyond, let’s make big stuff happen. Let’s plant 7.8 billion trees for the Earth. Let’s divest from fossil fuels and make cities 100% renewable. Let’s take the momentum from the Paris Climate Summit and build on it.

Let’s start now. And let’s not stop.
