Charged Hong Kong X Belilios Public School's Summer program

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS/ EVENT TEACHERS: Charged Hong Kong X Belilios Public School's Summer program

Charged Hong Kong is holding our very first Summer program for schools in Hong Kong to promote clean air and sustainable transportation. Our first partner in 2016 is Belilios Public School.

We are recruiting volunteers as event teachers, please sign up if you are willing to pass on your experience and knowledge to our young students.

  • Participants: around 66 junior secondary students and 3 teachers
  • Time: 2-4pm Date: 14th July 2016 (Thurs)
  • Venue: Kai Tak Cruise Terminal

Our learning objective is to provide students with basic (to advanced) knowledge of electric vehicles (EV) and related technology, as well as the important role that EVs play in combating climate change in Hong Kong and around the world. This program will not only be interactive, fun and informative for your students, their knowledge in maths, sciences and I.T. will also be put to the test. Our team of volunteers are experts from various fields and will be able to provide a broad perspective in understanding all about EVs, such that they can teach their parents all about EVs after the event.

Please see the following draft lesson plan:

  • There will be 4-5 stations, each will be in-charged by volunteers from Charged Hong Kong
  • Each student will receive a worksheet (co-designed by Mr. Tim Tong and members of ChargedHK)
  • Each group of students will have approximately 25 mins at each station complete the tasks on the worksheet.
  • All students will attend Station 1 together. Students will then split into groups of 20s and attend Station 2-5. Each group is rotated after 20 mins. 5 mins are reserved for overrunning of station activities.
    • Station 1 -- (depends on weather) EV Acceleration & Torque: students can witness acceleration of EVs through a fixed distance and perform a timed experiment, i.e. calculate final velocity, acceleration of each run using smartphone stopwatch to find time.
    • Station 2 – Hotel ICON eBuses photo-competition: hop on the Hotel ICON eBuses, take photos and share them on your own Facebook page with a tag @hoteliconhk. The student with the most “likes” wins a prize. Souvenirs will be given to participants. Selected photos will be posted on Hotel ICON’s Facebook page!
    • Station 3 -- EV Touch & Feel: A chance to get inside of the EVs, learn how to operate the car (the car will remain stationary througout, i.e. no test rides), eg. using the 17" screen, frunk and trunk, etc.
    • Station 4 -- EV VS ICE Driving Mechanism & Design: learn the key differences between an EV and an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine vehicle), eg, regenerative braking, energy efficiency, centre of mass, safety designs, Autopilot capability, development towards semi-/full-autonomous driving, sustainable energy consumption & production, solar roof in USA with SC, eco-friendliness of EV.
    • Station 5 -- Supercharging: talk about the Supercharger (SC) technology in terms of battery design, battery cooling; EV Charging Standards: talk about difference between AC, DC and various charging standards and speed. eg. 13A socket charging and CHAdeMO charging, calculate time needed to charge, and learn about car park charging etiquette.
  • Free activity time (at least 20mins) and group photo-taking at grand lawn area/rooftop park.

Reward: Upon completing all tasks after visiting all stations, students will be awarded a Certificate of Participation issued by Charged Hong Kong for all their attentiveness and hard work.
